Popular U.S. coding and repository site GitHub Inc.is currently facing a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack on its servers. The San Francisco-based company is receiving huge amounts of international traffics meant for Chinese search giant Baidu Inc. According to the company, the onslaught began on Thursday and since then, their website have been intermittently offline. At the time of writing, GitHub is online but still deflecting the attack. GitHub is a web-based Git repository hosting service which normally holds a lot of open source software projects. According to Wall Street Journal, the attack appears to be targeting 2 GitHub pages that are linked to copies of sites banned in China. One is Greatfire.org while the other a copy of the New York Times’s Chinese language website. Based on a tweet from GitHub, it believes the purpose of the attack is to pressure the company to remove those pages.
