Microsoft to drop the 'Nokia' brand name

The Nokia brand will be no more as Microsoft plans to drop it and 'Windows Phone' in favour of 'Lumia'. Microsoft purchased Nokia's handset division in September 2013 for $7.2 billion. Nokia was once a dominant company in the mobile phone industry. It emerged in the late 1970s by producing its first mobile phone but became hugely successful when it began marketing phones using the GSM standard. Nokia was a key developer of GSM and GSM went on to become a global standard. Nokia was also the first phone company to ever produce a smartphone with the Nokia Communicator and its own Symbian OS but sadly, its smartphone and Symbian OS were later eclipsed by the Apple iPhone and iOS, which were far superior.
